Possible Reunion for Joyce's Former Girls Group |
|
Joyce's former girls group that she had back in the 60's are huge stars over in England. They recorded quite a few records back then and they are big hits in England. Joyce received a phone call from a gentleman there, and he wants to know if the group would consider coming over there to perform at a music festival. If this comes about we will provide the details. Anyone up for a roadtrip to England? |

It would be great if the Debonaires got together for a trip to England. Pat, when you talk to Joyce next time, tell her and Pam to check out the Soulful Detroit. Com website. There is some information on the site pertaining to the Debonaires, Golden World Studios, etc. And there was a great picture of Joyce and the Debonaires from way back in the day. I know she'd get a kick out of seeing it. Some of the members have also been asking about Joyce, Telma and Pam. they have a thread there and if they feel so inclined, they might want to join the group and post some responses....they have some old friends there who would love to hear from them. Please keep us posted on the proposed UK tour. A lot of Detroit music acts are going over to England and doing a few dates. I hear, the money is good and they roll out the red carpet. It's something Joyce might want to seriously consider. The upcoming Christmas recording...is this a Tony Orlando and Dawn project or something involving Joyce and Pam? Either way, I'm looking forward to it. |

Joyce and Pam Teaching Workshop at Henry Mancini School of Performing Arts |
|
Next week along with Windy and her two daughters, Joyce and Pam been invited to the Henry Mancini School of Performing Arts to do a work shop. They will be talking about how they got their start and will also be singing. It should be fun. There is a chance that they'll be doing more of that sort of thing. |

If I could carry a tune in a bucket, I'd be there, but alas my bucket has plenty of holes and is awfully squeaky. I'm glad to hear they are sharing the wealth of information they have with others. |

Exciting Update on the CD! |
|
This last week was a whirlwind of meetings for the group. Things are looking up and beginning to get organized. There were two days of meetings where they mostly concentrated on what songs they all want to go on the Christmas CD. Joyce commented that it was totally awesome because they've never been able to suggest songs for the recording; they were always picked in advance and they never had any input. They think the CD is going to be wonderful. It is being produced by Michael Omartian. |

Re: Exciting Update on the CD! |
| I hope you will let us know what songs they are going to do--traditional or new music. Personally, I prefer the traditional songs, but I'd be happy with whatever they decide to do. | |

Telma Hopkins, Joyce and Pam Vincent |
|
Spotted Telma Hopkins in the audience at the recent NAACP Image Awards. Telma was one of the audience members really enjoying the performance by Prince during the show's taping. Telma, Joyce and Pam have been the subjects of discussion on another forum. Basically, fans of the ladies are interested in knowing what Detroit recording sessions the ladies sang on. And was Telma and Joyce a part of Brandye, a session group that backed soul singers Johnnie Taylor and Millie Jackson on some of their recordings? I believe Pam was involved in this group, but I'm not sure about DAWN. Interesting to note that some have theorized that it is possible that Telma, Joyce and Pam might have still been doing an occasional session while they were also working on Tony Orlando and Dawn sessions; I'm not 100 percent sure of this. The ladies are gaining respect for the session work they did all those years ago. Also, please keep us posted on the proposed reissues of the original Bell albums by Tony Orlando and Dawn and the DVD. |
|
|
|
|
|
I once asked the ladies if they kept any listing of all the records they had recorded over the years as session singers and they just laughed. They said there was no way they could remember all of them. I will ask about the specific ones you mentioned |

Re: Telma Hopkins, Joyce and Pam Vincent |
| I do remember Joyce mentioning at the TV on DVD Awards that they never stopped session work for other acts after becoming Dawn. Pam was in Brandye--Telma and Joyce weren't. Pam was with Aretha Franklin from the 60s into the 80s I think.-There is a Saturday Night Live clip of Aretha with Pam in the background from the early 80s I think. Pam was on all the TOAD records with Telma and Joyce after they became Dawn. Aretha needed Pam for her shows so Pam was never able to appear with TOAD. That's why Pam is known as the "Invisible" Dawn member. Joyce and Pam kept going with session work in the 80s to present. | |

Tony Orlando |
| Aloha, My name is Rita and I interviewed Tony for a local Calif. paper in the 1990's when he lived in Calabasas, California. I met him & his family when his baby Jenny Rose was just an infant. Meeting & interviewing was a dream come true because he was a favorite of mine as a teenager. Our birthdays are just 3 day's apart-Tony's is April 3rd & mine is April 6th. I was in his dressing room at the Golden Nugget in Vegas in 1992 & we were celebrating our birthdays. He sang Happy Birthday to me. That is a memory I will always cherish. Another memory I will never forget is during a performance he came up to me in the front row & gave me a kiss on the cheek. God did I feel special or what??? I even went all the way to Branson on opening day when Tony opened his Yellow Ribbon Theater. I felt privileged that I was allowed to go into his dressing room & visit him. I was saddened when I heard that a number of years later that the theater had closed. I did see him in Vegas after that. I have interviewed a few famous celebrities but none as compassionate & caring as Tony Orlando. At my initial interview I even mentioned to Tony that I wanted to write his biography someday. That will be my ultimate dream come true! |

Legends: Tony Orlando and Dawn |
| Hello to all my fellow
Tony Orlando and Dawn friends: Some of you might be interested to know there is a great three disc set entitled "Legends" by Tony Orlando and Dawn." It's not exactly a boxed set, but close enough. The discs, the most comprehensive collection to date, feature 45 classic songs by Tony, Telma and Joyce. Included are 10 tracks from "...New Ragtime Follies," which has yet to make its debut on digital disc. Most of the material was culled from the group's stay at Arista/Bell Records. Look for it at your favorite online music retailer. |

Finding a Miracle |
| I have searched many times for a glimpse of my brother, Kevin Davies, drummer, who traveled on the road with Tony Orlando.(1973-1974) I found a picture of him today and it was like finding my pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. He passed away 7 yrs. ago at the age of 49 and I miss him terribly, but finding this took me right back to his 15 minutes in the sun. Thank-you to whoever took this picture, I can't tell you how great it was to see his name in this photo, I'm not sure who the girl is with him, but doesn't matter, what matter's is that someone included him and to whoever she is, just wanted you to know that he was a great man who is so loved and missed, and you were in the presence of someone very special...Thank-you.. Robin. | |

| Robin, I am so glad you posted! Please accept my condolences. I was sorry to hear that Kevin had passed away. I agree, Kevin was a very special person. I have fond memories of him all those years ago. He was such a terrific guy! That was me in the picture with him. | |

Tony Orlando & Dawn & ABBA |
| Any chance that the "Tony Orlando & Dawn Ultimate Prime Time" DVD 3 disc set to be released soon has any of the taped but un-aired show where ABBA were the musical guests? I know the show was taped but T.O. & Dawn's variety series went off the air before that show could be aired. Tony Orlando & Dawn and ABBA are the two greatest groups of all time as far as I'm concerned & including that "never before seen" show or clips from it would make an awesome "DVD extra" to include in the box set! | |
Pat 03-08-05 11:52 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn & ABBA |
| I wasn't aware of the ABBA guest appearance on the show. Maybe someone else knows about it who went to tapings frequently, Robin? | |
Del 03-09-05 7:15 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn & ABBA |
| WOW-I don't think anyone knows of or has thought about any taped but unaired spots. Can't hurt to check into the question though. I'll alert Brant to look into it. Maybe Tony and the girls might remember something if asked. | |
Robin 03-09-05 8:30 PM |
Re: ABBA-solutely? |
| Yes, Pat, you are right, I
was at a lot of tapings, and just "hangin' out" at CBS when I didn't have
tickets. I don't recall ABBA ever having appeared on the show, or even a
rumor of them appearing. (The biggest HOT pop band I recall being on the
show was the Bay City Rollers.) And I don't believe there were any unaired
TOAD shows - they only taped a few weeks in advance, and when the ax fell
(with almost no warning) the last few shows did air. Now, that's not to say that there aren't plenty of unaired segments (and it would be great to see those on DVD!); and I'm not ruling out the possibility that there might have been a "private" taping with ABBA. That's the way they did the Bay City Rollers, not as part of the regular show taping, but a smaller, afternoon taping with a select audience. (I just happened to be there that day, which is how I know how they did it.) So you're going to have to go to a better source than I for the ultimate answer to this question. Terri? Paging Terri? |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn & ABBA |
| Count me in as another who doesn't recall that taping. As Robin said above, there wasn't much lead time between taping and airing, something like 2-3 week as I recall. | |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn & ABBA |
| Hello-I posted the original message about ABBA on TONY ORLANDO & DAWN'S variety hour & about clips from that show being included on the upcoming DVD box set. I was trying to recall where I heard about the un-aired show as it's been almost 30 years ago! All I can think of was I was a member of ABBA's fan club back then (& Tony & Dawn's, too!) & I believe it was in one of ABBA's fan club newsletters that I remember it said they were going to be on Tony and Dawn's show. Maybe it was never taped, I just presumed it had been. I know ABBA was on an Olivia Newton John special around that time (along with Andy Gibb) which was aired in the U.S. & that would have been about the same time I heard they were to appear on Tony and Dawn's show, as ABBA seldom visited the U.S., so if it would have happened it would have been around that time (1975-1976). After reading the responses to my original posting it's sounds as though if ABBA would have appeared on the show someone would have been at the taping & so far no one can recall it happening. I think that two of the most anticipated reunions that music fans around the world are hoping for would be our beloved TONY ORLANDO & DAWN and Sweden's ABBA. I just think if that taping of the two groups together ever did happened it would now be considered a historical event and a great "DVD extra" on the upcoming box set. I'm still holding out hope that it did indeed happen & is sitting in the CBS archives somewhere! | |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn & ABBA |
| I talked to Joyce today and asked her. Robin, you'll be interested to know that she said the same thing you did (without any prompting from me) the biggest group at the time was the Bay City Rollers and she said they were a huge hit. Everybody went wild over them. Then we both wondered whatever happened to them... | |

ABBA |
| A couple of ABBA
biographies and some CD liner notes mention ABBA appearing as guests on TOAD
in October of 1976 when they visited the US for promotion (they appeared on
Dick Clark, Merv Griffin, Don Kirschner, Wolfman Jack, Dinah!, Wonderama,
Midnight Special). However, I've never seen any clip of them from TOAD. Can
anyone actually confirm if they were guests on the show?
Is there a list of show guests? |
|
Pat 05-14-05 12:03 |
Re: ABBA |
| Jon, as you can see this has been discussed at length in this thread. There is a complete list of show guests at this link on our site. | |
