Yellow Ribbon
I have always thought this song was about a man serving in the military. That the prison part was just a metaphor.  My best friend thinks otherwise. Who's right? Did he really write about being in prison?

"To Be With You"

The song "To Be With You" is great. Did you know that Freddie Prinze, Sr is singing on the backup vocals?  Just a tidbit of trivia I thought I'd share.  Freddie had a great voice and sang one of the opening numbers on one of the TOAD shows. Great talent.

Welcome to Friends of TOAD, Macca!  Yes, it is pretty common knowledge among TOAD fans about Freddie's performance on that album, but thanks for sharing the trivia with those who don't know..

Yeah, I was still pretty young when that record was recorded so at the time I wasn't reading articles or newspapers to find out tidbits such as this ;). But I *am* surprised I didn't hear or read about it in all these years since then. You learn something new every day, I guess.

Does the actor Freddy Prinze Jr ever converse with Tony Orlando?  His father and Tony Orlando were such good friends that it seems like they would.  Also, where does Sarah Michelle Gellar fit in?

TOAD in the Studio!
Here are some more tidbits for all TOAD fans from Joyce:

For some special advance info for all the fans, we will be leaving on June 19 for Nashville.  We will be recording all that week and will return that Friday night.

I won't give you a list of all of the songs that are going to be on the Christmas CD, but here are a few: Christmas Song, Mary's Boy Child, Ave Maria, Silent Night, to name a few.  It's all very exciting.  There is also in the works a non-Christmas song for the group perhaps to be released the first of the year.  There is even talk about another non-Christmas CD sometime in the new year.  How sweet it is!

TOAD in Nashville.  What a hoot!  Michael Omartin is an outstanding producer so this CD will definitely be a superior product.  I wonder, Joyce, what your reaction is to recording in the studio again with TOAD, after so many years apart?  With technology screaming along in the ensuing years since TOAD recorded was there anything different being in the studio then versus now?  Just curious.

And the Good News Just Keeps On Coming!
Just a few more tidbits to pass along to all you anxious folks--from Joyce:

Regarding the DVD:  There is talk about us doing some interviewing to add the DVD package.  Brant was talking about us coming to Portland, to shoot the footage.  No dates have been set yet, but I've got a feeling it will be soon.

Regarding the Christmas CD:  I know the fans are going to love the Christmas CD  It is absolutely beautiful.  I love it!!!  Michael Omaritan is one talented man.  His producing is totally awesome.  I can't wait to get it done.  We are all so very excited about it.  Tony and Telma said they love it too.  It is really going be something to behold.  I know the songs we did before were good, but this is so very different than what we did back in the day.  There is something for everyone on this CD and its going to be awesome.  I can't wait.

Re:  And the Good News Just Keeps On Coming!
It's all coming together so very well. Michael Omaritan is doing a great job of capturing Tony Orlando & Dawn while making it all very 2005! I really believe the Christmas album will not only make fans happy, but also be the unique Christmas offering the public has been looking for but not getting in recent years. A little more trivia. There is a BELL Records connection for Michael Omaritan too. Michael played keyboards for the last season of The Partridge Family.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the News We've All Been Waiting For!

R2 Entertainment is releasing the DVD debut of the "Tony Orlando and Dawn" variety TV show in a three-disc DVD set on September 13.

Yes, that's right all you Friends of TOAD out there, finally an official release date!

The disc will accompany the reissue of the group's entire music catalog for the first time on CD in a six-disc set.

Joyce was always my favorite.  She was so quiet and shy, but when you least expected it, she would let out a zinger or two.  I hope they put in some of the Lou Effy and Moreen sketches.  Anytime I see one of those bathrobes that look like they are made out of a bedspread, it makes me think of them.

I have thought about how special it would be for them to do a Christmas album and now, this Christmas, I can cozy up by the fireplace, well, if I had one :), and listen to their beautiful voices singing my favorite Christmas tunes. HOT DOG!
I'm 17 again!  Really! :D  Well, at least I will be when I spot myself in the audience once again.  And, I'm just boggled to recall that I actually was there for both the Jackie Gleason and the Kate Smith tapings.  (Not to mention that Bay City Roller taping, which I really do need to write up for the Archives like I promised.)

Seriously, Pat, this is amazing news.  The last time I saw anything from the variety show (since I don't have cable, hence no airings on Good Time TV) was circa '78, while visiting Joyce, and she fired up her 3/4" machine to pop in a video or two from her personal memorabilia collection....

Cool chicks back on the screen, but this time it is a big screen TV and not the tiny little ones with mediocre picture and sound.  Even those people who have been able to see the show while it was airing on Good Life should be in for a treat with the quality they get from DVD in both picture and sound.

Okay, who is the first one here that is going to have a TOAD party.  I wonder if I can remember those dance steps I made up in the rec room to go along with the songs.  I remember the hand move Telma and Joyce did with Tie and Yellow Ribbon.  They always looked so great and dressed in the most exotic outfits and they were so lucky to be able to work with Tony.  Now as for my man Tony, who could look better in a tux and platform shoes I ask you?  Absolutely no one!  I'm just drooling thinking about it.  And that hair:  how many of us have thought about running our fingers through it?  I'd better stop now.  I'm getting a bit carried away. <blush>

Re:  Ladies and Gentlemen, the News We've All Been Waiting For
Thrilling news!  They will make such great gifts too and since this isn't a show that is shown wide in syndication many people haven't seen it in years.  Like me.  I think I may be the first person to wear out the DVD, even though they say it is impossible.

At last!  Does anyone know how we can buy it?  Is there going to be a presale at any store or on online?

Re:  Ladies and Gentlemen, the News We've All Been Waiting For
I love to see so many people excited about the release of the DVD and CDs.  I'm personally looking forward to the new Christmas CD.  I always wondered why they hadn't recorded one while they were still appearing together.  I collect Christmas music and I always felt my collection was lacking without one from them.  I'll be glad to fill that space in October.

Great to see so many people excited about this news.  It should sell like blockbusters when it's released.

Re:  Ladies and Gentlemen, the News We've All Been Waiting For
All these posts are so wonderful.  Obviously this has created quite a buzz.  Sales should be outstanding.  Maybe if it is so successful someone will take the tedious task of getting clearance for each show and we could end up with each season on  DVD one day.

Will there be any bonus material on these DVDs?  Someone else asked about bloopers.  Those would be hysterical.

It's great that there are so many TOAD fans out there waiting for the release of the DVDs.  I don't think I can add much to what's already been said.

That's wonderful news. I can't wait to see the clips from the variety show again. The Christmas album will be nice too. I'm buying both of them the day they come out!

Terrific!  I'm going to be first in line for this DVD!  Will they be selling autographed copies, like people do for book releases?  It would be cool to have a signing party.

Too bad no one is excited about it all-LOL. It's good to see a  board so lively. It's all going to be very worth the wait.

I will be glad to have TOAD in my living room again.  I hope they make the talk show circuit, because it would be great to hear them talk about working together on the show.

Re:  Ladies and Gentlemen, the News We've All Been Waiting For
I have to comment on how wonderful it is to see the responses here to a release date.  I know many of you have been patiently waiting since Brandt first raised the question on this board two years ago of what we would like to see in a DVD.  The response was outstanding then and I can only believe it showed the company how many people had an interest in the project.  And again the response is there now.  Obviously, no one has lost interest in this project on this board!

Re:  Ladies and Gentlemen, the News We've All Been Waiting For
Wow! What great fan interest! If this doesn't show TPTB that the need for a TOAD reunion is at hand, then I don't know what will! I am looking forward to the commentary from the group on the DVD. Someone mentioned bloopers too. That would be so great if those were included. Of course, if they do, they will HAVE to include the on-air blooper of Phyllis Diller's wig coming off. That was an absolutely priceless moment of this show! I would also love to see Lou Effy and Moreen bloopers. And a musical, photo montage at the end would be nice to see. Oh, the anticipation :).

Re:  Ladies and Gentlemen, the News We've All Been Waiting For
Julie, I know what you mean.  I've been overwhelmed with the posts flooding in on this subject.  It is just wonderful that so many people have responded in such a positive way.  The numbers have really cranked up on our Message Board too, so for the number of people who have posted, there are many more who are reading all about it.  All good things!

There's not much I can add to all of the above posts, except to say this is the best thing that has happened to the DVD market in a long time.

Re:  Ladies and Gentlemen, the News We've All Been Waiting For
Does anyone know how the Christmas CD is going to go?  Will it be modern or traditional or what?  I love that they are doing clips of the shows, as sometimes the material of the 70s doesn't really hold up over time.  So for now, I'm happy with select clips.

Re:  Ladies and Gentlemen, the News We've All Been Waiting For
I hope that this will be a very successful DVD, so that they will release more clips from more shows.  I know once I see the DVD I will remember dozens more scenes or songs that I wished they had included on it.  Still it is a wonderful thing happening for the group. Oh yes, also thank you for telling us about it.

I am in the process of collecting photos of entertainers from the era I grew up on. Does anyone know how I can get a photo of Tony Orlando & Dawn to go with my photo collection?
Mike

Tony

Tony is an awesome performer, and I have been a fan since I was 10 years old. Can anyone tell me where to get some of his older music?

Re:  Tony

Most of the older music is currently available on compilation CDs both in stores and on line.  The DAWN catalogue will be released on CD later this summer.  There's always eBay if you are looking for record albums.
