Concert |
| I have just returned from
the 2004 Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States National Convention
in Cincinnati, OH. Tony Orlando was the performer at the Patriotic Rally on
Tuesday, August 17th and was outstanding. He commented that he would
perform for a Veterans Conference and I would like to contact someone in
regard to a Big Ten VFW Conference that will be held in Iowa October of
2005. Who do I email to? Thank you. |

In search of... |
| My all-time favorite Telma
and Joyce duet that they did at least twice on the TV show, and IIRC
occasionally in concert, was their beautiful blending of "Can't Take My Eyes
Off of You" with "My Eyes Adored You" (two incredible Frankie Valli/Four
Seasons numbers). As far as I know, that duet never appeared in any
officially-released format. I used to have an audio tape of it from the show
(quite memorably, it was Dawn's final duet on the final Rainbow Hour) but
those tapes bit the dust long ago. Anyone who may still have that gem preserved, could you please contact me offlist at robinschin AT aol.com? I'm in a new relationship and my sweetie MUST hear that classic duet, if you know what I mean. ;) With thanks in advance to all my TOAD enablers - Robin |

Re: In search of... |
| Robin--I am checking to see if my copy is in good condition. They did that medley twice during the run of the show. If the last show is not in good condition, but the other performance is would you want that one? | |

Backup Band |
| Saw TO in Peachtree, GA. Great show! Awesome back up band. What is the name of the back up band? Do they have any CD's available? | |
Re: Backup Band |
|
| The Lefty Brothers is the name of the backup band. No CDs available. | |
Fred 08-15-04 6:22 PM |
Re: Backup Band |
| TO rocked PTC. The Lefty Bros need to get web site, and come back to see us with a 70's theme show. Whole Lotta Love Rocked! | |
Del 08-15-04 6:44 PM |
Re: Backup Band |
| Here's a bit more info on the band that should satisfy a few posts in one. Kerry Cole on vocals, acoustic guitar and keyboards. Tracy Cole on vocals and lead guitar. Jim Shelton on vocals and bass. Michael Jackson on vocals and drums. Toni Wine vocals and keyboard. David Orlando on keyboards. Kerry and Tracy are brothers and have been together with Jim Shelton for over 20 years as the Lefty Brothers-the best band in the midwest. David is Tony's brother and has co-written with Tony the new songs performed in the show like "Caribbean Jewel" and "God's Country". Toni Wine co-wrote "Groovy Kind of Love", "Black Pearl", "Candida" and "What Are You Doing Sunday" and countless other songs. She has written and performed many commercial jingles including "Meow Mix". She provided the singing voices of Betty and Veronica for the Archies including "Sugar Sugay" and "Jingle Jangle". Toni also sang background vocals on many records like "Always on My Mind","Do You Know the Way to San Jose", "Suspicious Minds", "Candida" and "Knock Three Times". Michael Jackson-a most welcome addition- joined the band earlier this year with his drumming and harmonizing talents. They are all as wonderful people as they are talented. | |

MDA Telethon |
| Hi, Do you think Tony will have Joyce and Telma join him on the Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon? That would give them more exposure and the group may get back together again, that would be wonderful, should we ask Tony's manager. I got the DVD of the PBS Special it is great I loved it when they sang Fire and Rain and He Don't Love You, that's on volume 2, If you don't have this call PBS to pledge. | |
Pat 08-14-04 12:35 PM |
Re: MDA Telethon |
| As of the date of this post, they have not been asked. They weren't asked last year either. | |

Concert at The Hard Rock Hotel and Casino |
|
I had the pleasure of seeing Tony Orlando and his fabulous and talented band at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Florida. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by Tony's charisma and the sweet and loving way he pulled in the audience by making them feel young and full of life. Most of the people in the Audience were over 60 and for 2 hours he had them bouncing and clapping to songs from the 50's 60's 70's and 80's. He gloats on how proud he is of his band and I must say they are all very special. He doesn't take the whole show for himself and allows every band member to show their special talent. If you can don't miss this remarkable show if it comes to a town near you. It's a must see. |

What Does It Mean? |
|
We have a debate going on in our house, that I need help with. What is he singing about in " Tie a yellow ribbon ", is it a " I just got out of prison " song, or is it " I just got out of the service "song? |
|
|
|
|
|
The short answer is: It is a I just got out of prison song. Later it was adapted for returning prisoner's of war for the Vietnam War and other subsequent wars. |

Tony In Atlantic City |
| Tony was in concert Saturday the 7th at the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Oh my God--he brought down the house. It is the best show I have seen...ever...he still "rocks." Will love him forever. | |

PBS Special |
| OMG!!! The opening scene to this show was
hysterical. Tony was walking down the street with TJ Lubinsky and
various people came up to him and said: "Hey you used to sing with Dawn. Man I remember you. Dawn was incredible, you were okay." "My grandma used to talk about you all the time and she used to talk about it was Dawn featuring Tony Orlando." "Are you Tony Orlando? Where's Dawn?" TOAD sings Tie a Yellow Ribbon in the first segment. No TOAD in the second segment. TOAD sings, Candida, Knock Three Times, and Sweet Gypsy Rose (complete with all three going into the audience). The audience was on their feet the entire time! Not seen on TV tonight but on Vol. II of the DVD (the bonus footage only available with the high end donation) includes TOAD singing Fire and Rain, He Don't Love You, and a reprise of Yellow Ribbon with the whole cast. |

Re: PBS Special |
| WOW! Well worth the wait! Tony was as exuberant as ever, getting the crowd into it just as he used to on the television show. Telma and Joyce were as lovely and graceful as ever, and sounded fantastic. What a joy to see the three back together again singing! I can't wait for that DVD! A must see for any Tony Orlando and Dawn fan! Loved it! | |

| Tony and the "girls" were awesome! Does anybody have an agenda of appearances? | |
Pat 08-07-04 9:43 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Tony and the girls do not currently tour together. Rumors of reunion tours frequently float around on various boards. If something does ever get scheduled, you will hear about it here! | |
George 08-07-04 9:45 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Thanks for the tip off of the San Jose station. I got to see it a week earlier than they are showing it on the San Francisco station. It was so cool seeing and hearing them sing together again. They could have shown more shots of the ladies though. | |
Ron 08-07-04 9:47 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Fantastic seeing them again! It brought back some good old days memories. TOAD used to perform a lot in the Bay Area back in the day. I hope they do again sometime. | |
Frank 08-07-04 9:58 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I was reading the paper and my wife was watching TV when suddenly I heard familiar voices. Could it be Dawn featuring Tony Orlando? ;) Wow, what a blast from the past that was. I can't believe it has been 14 years since they last performed together. You certainly couldn't tell that. They gave off the same vibe they did 30 years ago. Why is it they aren't performing together? | |
Jan 08-07-04 10:04 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| It was the 70s all night at my house! I had all three TVs on the same station and volume turned up loud. My neighbors must have thought I lost it (I'm usually so quiet). This is a great site! It was a great show. Bring us more TOAD! | |
Erica 08-07-04 10:10 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I'm surprised they sat on this show over a year! It was terrific seeing the group together again. I'm sorry to hear that they don't tour, because I'd be first in line for tickets! I ordered the DVD from the show and can't wait for it to arrive. | |
Marie 08-07-04 10:23 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Memmmmmmmmories, wow! What a show. I ordered the $300 version to get the parts they didn't show on TV. Why do they always cut out the best parts? The little bit they showed of them singing Fire & Rain made me want to see the whole thing. I loved it when they used to do other groups songs during the days they were performing together. I wish they would tour again. | |
Kathy 08-07-04 11:55 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I'm glad I checked here and saw that I could see it a week earlier than the PBS affiliate in San Francisco! It was a great show and made me miss seeing this great group all the more. Hopefully, some promoter will recognize the audience reaction and put something together for them to tour again. I know Telma's on a TV show, but they have regular breaks. Maybe something can be worked out during those breaks? It looked like they were having loads of fun on screen together again. | |
Alex 08-08-04 12:13 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I certainly enjoyed this PBS special tonight. It was great seeing all the performers on the show, but the outstanding jewel was the reunion of Tony Orlando and Dawn. Their repertoire is extensive enough that they could have carried most of the show doing their own hits. They always did an excellent job of cover versions of other hits both in their touring days and on the television show. They really should have had Tony, Telma and Joyce hosting pledge breaks though, it would have been much better. I knew the guy was the producer, but who wanted to listen to that lady drone on and on or watch her making googly eyes at Tony. LOL! How great it would have been to have Tony, Telma and Joyce sitting there, promoting PBS and getting their thousands of fans to donate! | |
Ed 08-08-04 1:53 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| The music is still stuck in my head, so I hauled out my old albums for a spin on the turntable. What great music they performed over their years together. So when's the reunion TOAD? | |
Viki 08-08-04 6:05 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Here it is Sunday morning and I'm still thinking about the show last night. I ended up dreaming about them all night, performing in concert. | |
Lisa 08-08-04 8:18 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I agree with the post above; they certainly could have carried the whole show. They did get to sing more songs than anyone else, but still I wanted more. I guess that they had to be fair and share with the rest of the groups, but how many of them had successful television shows back in the day. We used to watch TOAD for an hour every week and still wanted more! I was one of the lucky who used to see them in concert all the time, between their Bay Area appearances and the ones in Reno and Tahoe. | |
Rosie 08-08-04 8:20 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I was pleased to see that they gave Telma and Joyce more camera time on this than they did on the TV Land Awards. After all it is about them being together again! It was great that there was a full orchestra backing them too. Telma and Joyce joining Tony in the audience was fun too. | |
Jeannie 08-08-04 8:55 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I wish they would have gotten the number of years since they performed together right. 14, 16, and 17 years were all mentioned in the show. It made it seem less important to the people saying it that they didn't know the right number. I know that I saw them perform together in Alameda in 1989, so I know that it wasn't 16 or 17 years ago! I don't know exactly when Pam started taking over for Telma, but I know that they continued to perform together until 1993 when Tony moved to Branson. | |
Pam 08-08-04 9:23 AM |

Re: PBS Special |
| Telma!!! Joyce!!!! Tony!!!! It was great that you all got together for this PBS special. So when are you going to get together and get yourselves back on the road for the rest of us to see you perform for a whole show? | |
Michelle 08-08-04 10:23 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| It was a great show and I enjoyed seeing the other acts too, but none of them were as great as Tony, Telma and Joyce, together again! It left me wanting more. | |
Joe 08-08-04 10:24 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Great seeing them together again. I hope they do more of these special appearances if they don't go out on the road anymore. | |
Barry 08-08-04 10:42 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I watch Telma on Half & Half, but didn't know that she was part of Dawn. She did sing on a couple of shows, but now I wish they would have her sing more. Or, maybe not, maybe I'd rather see her perform live now. | |
Lyn 08-08-04 11:03 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I so enjoyed this show last night. What a great group they were and still are. Judging from the posts hear and the whole audience on their feet in the show last night, I think that speaks for itself. TOAD ON THE ROAD. TOAD ON THE ROAD. TOAD ON THE ROAD. Come on everybody TOAD ON THE ROAD! | |
Dan 08-08-04 11:35 |

Re: PBS Special |
| Childhood revisited! They still sound good together. I'm surprised that the three of them didn't host the show though. Hey Dick Clark, how about using them to host the American Music Awards this year? Hey Buena Vista, how about a TOAD talk show? They'd make great hosts! | |
Freddie 08-08-04 12:52 PM |

Telma and Joyce must've been fantastic, judging by your reactions. So far,
there's no word of it being shown on my local station but you can bet I'm
checking daily. LOL Glad you all were able to see it and I'm eagerly awaiting my chance. Julie |

Re: PBS Special |
| I was so excited to see Tony, Joyce and Telma last night. I told all of my friends to watch the PBS Special last night. Instead they came to my house we had a TOAD party before the show and after the show. They sounded so great together. Lets hope they get back together again. They are awesome. | |
Laurie 08-10-04 10:05 PM |
Re: PBS Special |

Phyliss 08-10-04 10:13 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Thanks for the tip off for the New York area. I couldn't find anything about showing except this board. I enjoyed the show immensely, especially TOAD. Why didn't they have Telma and Joyce hosting the breaks too? I didn't understand that. They missed out on a great opportunity. Still it was good seeing them again. | |
Byron 08-10-04 10:26 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I am still laughing about that opening they did before the theater performance. What great humor! It's a question I always wonder about too. Why don't they tour together anymore? Obviously the crowd loved them. Just like the crowd at the TV Land Awards. | |
Melanie 08-10-04 10:44 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| It was as close to the old TV show as I've ever seen. With the joke on Tony in the beginning and then Telma and Joyce coming out overtalking his intro, it was just sooooooooooooo cute! There's a lot of life left in this group and it's a shame they don't tour together. | |
Suzie 08-10-04 10:46 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Music, music, music. It is still running through my head. I will go to bed tonight with a smile on my face, with memories of years gone by. I wonder how long it took them in rehearsal to get their moves back together. They didn't look stiff or stilted at all. It was like they are on stage together all the time. It was embarrassing that they couldn't get the number of years right on the show though. <for shame> | |
Bennett 08-10-04 10:51 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| It was a wonderful show, but I kept wondering how much better the show would have been if they sang ALL the songs that night. | |
Gloria 08-10-04 11:03 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| What a joy! Life is good and the earth has gone back on its axis! A reunion of my #1 FAV group of all time! It was a night full of emotion and I loved every minute of it. I rewound the tape to their parts and played them over a couple of times. They are still so great together. | |
Gary 08-10-04 11:11 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| The show finally aired in my area. I've been greatly anticipating it because of all of the posts on this board and I certainly wasn't disappointed in the least. Well, maybe a bit because I would have preferred seeing more of them! Why didn't they all host the pledge breaks? The show was all about the reunion, so why not continue that in the pledge break? What a missed opportunity. Nevertheless, I enjoyed it immensely. | |
Denise 08-10-04 11:13 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| See all we have to do is be patient and eventually things will come around. First the TV Land Awards, then the PBS Special and sometime next year the DVD is supposed to be released. Now we just need to build on the momentum and hopefully there will be a reunion tour coming our way. The bigger responses the TV stations get to their appearances, the greater the chance that will happen. So, I hope you all pledged while they were on, and specifically mentioned that you pledged BECAUSE they were on. I know I did. | |
Allie 08-10-04 11:21 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| What a delightful show that was tonight. I am glad that we didn't have to wait too long to see the program in our area. Tony, Telma and Joyce sure looked like they were enjoying themselves being back on that stage together. And I enjoyed it too! Thank you TOAD for doing this for PBS! | |
Libbie 08-10-04 11:29 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Wow 2 appearances on TV in one year! How lucky are we? Here's hoping to more in the future. | |
David 08-10-04 11:33 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I have been waiting patiently for over a year to see this show as I know most of you have been when we read about it here in May of 2003. I was not disappointed in the final product. The fact that they were able to perform 4 of their hit songs, much more than the other performers, tells me that the editors recognized that special spark too. Hurrah for PBS for starting the idea of a reunion (although it was not the first shown). | |
Vickie 08-10-04 11:59 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I loved seeing Joyce and Telma perform with Tony again. I've seen him on the road a few times and it is a good show, but it would be a fantastic show if they toured together again. | |
Barry 08-14-04 7:15 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| The long awaited special just finished airing in my area. It was surely wonderful to see this group perform together again. Please folks, donate money to PBS so they can afford to have a decent research department. What is this with the 14, 16, 17 years thing? Also, did anyone else catch TJ saying during the last pledge breaks, "Tony reunited with Dawn and Telma for history." Hey, TJ, its Joyce and Telma! Aside from the inane chatter from that woman during the pledge breaks, it was a good show. | |
Alison 08-14-04 7:23 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| It was a dream come true. If PBS and TV Land can get this group back together, what's wrong with the rest of the producers out there? I think the talk show mentioned above is an outstanding idea. Anyone who has had the pleasure of speaking with these people after a show and listening to their wonderful stories, understands what a great idea this is! They don't even need any guests, I would just love to listen to their stories about the old days, Hey Telma and Joyce, where are your autobiographies? Your connection to Motown in its heyday would be very interesting to hear about. | |
Janice 08-14-04 7:35 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| I loved the show. What a great opportunity to get this wonderful group together again and hear their music. | |

Re: PBS Special |
| They finally aired the PBS
Special in my area last night! It was great to see and hear the three of
them together again after 14 years..still had the same great harmonies and
chemistry and really looked like they were having fun out there. A couple
of questions: Who was the guy with Tony in the opening segment where they were walking down the street in Pittsburg? That was a cute opening and he was a great "straight man". (Also saw him up on stage at the end where everyone was singing "Yellow Ribbon". In the beginning segment when Tony started signing "Yellow Ribbon", he seemed surprised that Joyce and Telma came out. Was that an act or was he really unaware that they were going to be singing with him? (Is that was the case..I am astonished at how great their voices blended and how they were together with no rehearsal and 14 yrs. apart!) I'm with the others..it would be great to see them in a full concert again. (Promoters are you listening!) Colleen |
|
Pat 08-15-04 10:35 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| The man with Tony in the opening segment playing the "straight man" was TJ Lubinsky. He was also the Executive Producer of the program and the person whose idea it was to get the group together for this special. He also did the pledge breaks. Tony's opening was an act. He knew that Joyce and Telma were there. They had one rehearsal together the morning of the taping of this program. | |

Re: PBS Special |
| It was music special night
on my local PBS station, with this program, followed by one on Jim Croce and
then the Superstars of the 70s Soul. What a wonderful night of 70s
music! My neighbors were wondering if I had a party. LOL!
With all that great music, my favorite of all was the reunion of TOAD.
They were a very special group to me when I was growing up and I never
missed their TV shows.
For those kids out there, there was no such thing as a VCR when we were growing up. You had one chance to see the show until summertime reruns came around. I was always disappointed that the show didn't go into syndication, although I understand that it is a headache with any program containing music. I am hoping that someone with a theater sees this show and gets a brilliant idea to reunite the group again for some live shows. I would travel any distance to see that. |

Re: PBS Special |
| I've been reading all the posts here the past week, anxiously waiting for our local PBS station to air the program. Thanks for giving us all the heads up about this show. I was so very happy to see them perform together again. I'm with the resounding consensus here and hope that someone in the "biz" can put together a tour for this great group. | |
Marianne 08-15-04 11:10 AM |
Re: PBS Special |
| It was a great show! It just reminded me how much I miss seeing this group perform together. I've seen a couple of Tony shows over the years and while they are very good, I always felt that something was missing from them. I was reminded of that last night--Telma and Joyce are an integral part of those hit songs and they just aren't the same with a bunch of guys doing the background vocals. I was remembering that Telma and Joyce did a killer medley of Burt Bacharach songs that would have blown away Dionne Warwick. In fact they could have performed all the music in that show last night and it would have ROCKED! I'm glad that Lubinsky have the wonderful brainstorm to put this show together. Thanks TJ, thanks PBS! | |
June 08-15-04 12:44 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Timeless music indeed! It was a joy to see them perform these songs live again. I am surprised, however, that PBS sat on this wonderful program for over a year before airing it! They actually beat TV Land to the reunion. It was a wonderful program and I agree with the other poster comments about the pledge breaks. I have ordered the DVD of course, because this is something I want to have in my permanent collection. | |
Diana 08-15-04 12:53 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| The excitement builds on reunion hopes! That's how I felt after watching this show. We can all dream :) They sang all their big hits TIe a Yellow Ribbon, Knock Three Times, and Candida and we were treated to the whole version of each song rather than a medley. And it was without all those dancers with the yellow ribbons on a stick like on the TV Land show. LOL. It looked to me like the audience was on their feet the whole time they were performing and so was I. It would be excellent if they did a reunion show. I hope they do someday. | |
Marianne 08-15-04 2:12 PM |
Re: PBS Special |
| Oh my what an exciting show that was. The other groups were great too, but seeing Tony Orlando and Dawn performing together again was the jewel in the crown of this show. I can't believe it has been 14 years since they performed together. They fell right back into it like they hadn't had that long break in between. It was amazing. I share everyone else's hope for a reunion tour some day soon. | |
Julie 08-20-04 |
Re: PBS Special |
| Wow, wow, wow! I finally
had my chance to see the PBS special and I was just blown away. The
chemistry, harmony and talent that this group has is just fabulous. For them
to walk out on that stage and perform together as if they have never been
apart is just amazing. Somebody in the business just has to see what a
following they still have and what excitement they generate from the stage
and set up some sort of reunion tour. Thank You Tony, Telma and Joyce for

I was the video editor on the series in the early 1970's. Saul Ilson and Ernie Chambers were the producers. Talented and terrific guys to work with. As I remember Jeff Margolis was the director. |
