8mm Video |
|
I found a Tony Orlando and Dawn 8mm film at an old thrift store; I didn't buy it but I'm thinking I should. Any ideas if this is worth anything, any interest? And BTW, my very first concert ever was when I was 13 or 14, I saw TOAD at the Boston Garden with my mom. Loved it. |

|
I would have bought it as it is part of history and worth some $ to TOAD fans. I would buy it. |

Listening to the old music.... |
| My mom just got one of
those "newfangled" radio/CD player/tape desk/turntable sets, which prompted
me to pull out my old TOAD albums (easy to do since they were in a box still
in her garage <g>). As I type this, for the first time in years I'm
listening to Tuneweaving: "Easy Evil", to be specific. The first thing I listened to, however, upon dragging the dusty box out of the corner of the garage, was a cut from Dawn's New Ragtime Follies. I'd completely forgotten that the song "Atlanta" even existed until a while back when someone on this board mentioned it. Then it got stuck in my head, of course. So I dropped the needle on Track 3, Side 2, and rocked out for three minutes. And it all came back - scarily so. Ditto (back to Tuneweaving) when I heard "Jolie", which was always one of my favorites. I could even "inflect" right along with the group, as opposed to merely "sing" along. The only drawback to the old LPs (other than, of course, feeling very old as it's been **30 years** since I used to lay on the living room floor in front of the hi-fi, headphones on and cranked to the max) is, of course, having to turn them over when the side is done So excuse me while I flip Tuneweaving and start Side II with "Tie a Yellow Ribbon".... "Steppin' Out" Single Version |
| I'm looking to find out if any of the myriad of TOAD collections actually contains the 45 mix of "Steppin' Out" with added strings and backing vocals....does anyone know which CD or CDs might contain this? Thanks for the help! | |

Re: "Steppin' Out" Single Version |
| The BMG import Very Best of Dawn featuring Tony Orlando contains the 45 mix. go to www.bn.com enter DAWN in artist search. | |

Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| If you could choose what would be on a TO&D DVD collection, what shows would you choose? Would your choices be based on the guests? The songs? Did TO&D sing many of their own hits on their variety series, or was it mostly covers? Do you prefer the original format of the show or the later "Rainbow" hour? Do you watch it regularly on the GoodLife network? Any and all fan feedback would be appreciated! | |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| The very first DVD should
be the four summer replacement series shows which aired July 3, 10, 17 and
24, 1974. These shows are the "lost episodes" so to speak. They only aired
once and were never shown on Goodlife.
Personally, I would like to see volumes put out in order of air date. Although TOAD did perform some of their songs on the show, the bulk of the songs were covers. During a typical show they would perform an opening number together, Tony would perform a solo, Telma and Joyce would sing a duet, and there was always a concert spot at the end with a medley of songs. If the guest was a musical guest there would be another number added to the show. As for the format, the only difference I recall with the Rainbow Hour was the addition of George Carlin. The Goodlife Network is not shown in my area. I have received a few tapes from friends who do get Goodlife and the shows have been heavily edited to fit into their time slot. Most often entire numbers or sketches were taken out of the show (usually the duets by Telma and Joyce). The only complete version of the shows I have are from the original audiotapes I recorded on the original airdates. My favorite regular sketch was LouEffy and Moreen. Just reading the transcripts from the show leaves me in hysterics! Of course, my best memories and favorite shows were the ones where I attended the taping :) It is truly strange to see yourself on tape looking 29 years younger and I don't even dare comment on those 70s fashions! Did I really go out in public dressed like that??? LOL!!!! I'm truly sorry that the shows aren't available on DVD. Over the 5 years this site has been running, we have been asked countless times if the show will ever be released on DVD. I've even spoken to Tony and the girls about it and they say the show was owned by CBS and Ilson & Chambers and they have no control over a DVD release. I know I would purchase the entire collection if it is ever released! |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| The first choice would be to have the show released in sets of complete seasons-like most television series are done now. If we can only have a one disc highlights, then it should contain all the hits and album cuts that were done on the show along with the top sketches. | |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| Hi, That would be wonderful. I too would like the shows in date order. I have some copies that I was able to get from Telma and Joyce back in the day but would still love to have them all. I was actually ON the show in April of the last season when Ruth Buzzi and Art Carney were guests and I gave Tony a birthday cake in the audience. I would LOVE to have a copy of that one for sure. I don't get Goodlife so a DVD collection would be great! |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| All of them, I want all of them! I haven't seen the show since the first time they were on. | |
Olivia 06-19-03 12:12 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| I don't get Goodlife. It would be great to get all the shows, but if I had to choose, my favorite is the episodes with Freddie Prinze! | |
Judy 06-19-03 12:14 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| I would buy them all especially the episode with Phyllis Diller when her wig fell off! I saw that clip on TV a while back and it was just as funny as the first time. | |
Chuck 06-19-03 12:14 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| The Jerry Lewis episode and the Jackie Gleason episode are the best. | |

| The one where Telma and Joyce were wearing the $1,000,000 in jewels. I wonder what they are worth today :) | |
Juney 06-19-03 12:25 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| There is one show where Kristoff St. John from the Young and the Restless is a kid in a LouEffy and MoReen sketch about the "Man from Bad." It made me wonder how many other "before they were stars" are in their sketches. I'd like to see a DVD of all the LouEffy & Moreen skits. Believe it or not I had a lot of friends who used soda. cans to roll their hair | |
Steph 06-19-03 2:51 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| I'd like all of their Holiday shows. A TOAD Xmas video would be so cool. | |
Jay 06-19-03 4:40 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| A DVD of Telma and Joyce singing all the duets from the show! | |
Dru 06-19-03 5:47 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| Decisions...decisions. How could I choose? I would like the entire series released on DVD. I don't get Goodlife, but I do know that they don't make good old fashioned entertainment like this anymore. The music was wonderful. | |
Carol 06-19-03 5:50 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| The summer replacement shows should be released first, then the rest of the episodes by season. If there was going to be a compilation of the "best" I'd like to see all the music, the group, the duets and the solos all put on one. I'd even like to see one of all of the Concert spots at the end. I'm sure everyone in each one of the audiences would want one to see themselves on TV all those years ago. | |
David 06-19-03 8:06 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| I agree with Pat that the summer shows should be released on DVD first for the same reasons. These are lost and it would be great to have them back to see them. And the summer shows Tony and Dawn performed a lot of their hits. I think the shows should be released on DVD by season ..the 74 season ..the 75 season ..and the 76 season.....I also think the Rainbow Hour was a huge face lift for the show and the show became too slick. Before Tony and Dawn was more a family show and now they where more like Saturday Night Live...which really was not them, although the production numbers where better and the costumes were as well. But I still prefer the first two seasons. It would be nice to have them on DVD. I still remember the jokes and the songs they would sing. | |
Julie 06-19-03 8:57 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| Wow, first of all wouldn't it be great if they were available on DVD. Now, what would I like to see... I definitely would want to see the "Lost Episodes" which Pat mentioned. GoodLife did not air them so most of us have not seen these particular episodes since their original airing in the 70s. I would definitely have to say I'd want the episodes which contained the most musical performances by TOAD. The guests were fine but Tony, Telma and Joyce were definItely the stars of the show and the show really was at its best when they were together. I also really enjoyed the duets by the girls and was often frustrated with GoodLife for editing many of them out of the episodes they aired. I have a greater fondness for the earlier format than the Rainbow Hour. And my absolute favorite and a MUST for any TOAD show DVD are the Lou Effy and Moreen sketches. What a hoot! Telma and Joyce were absolutely hilarious in those parts. I would buy an entire DVD set just for that! | |
Sue 06-19-03 9:24 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| Wow, so many wonderful ideas! First preference would be the entire series. If I had to choose a compilation DVD, I would put all the musical numbers like one giant Music Video on the DVD, and one DVD with all the Lou Effy and Moreen sketches. | |
Joe 06-19-03 9:26 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| The whole set! | |
Shirley 06-19-03 11:14 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| I'd like a DVD with all those goofy "fantasy segments" when Tony would dress up to fulfill some dream he had, like the Kung Fu Fighter, The Great Orlando, Superfly, Robin Hood, Frank Sinatra, The Maharishi Yogi, Zorro, Orango Tango, etc. | |
Marc 06-19-03 11:23 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| Your Episode Guide on the site was so helpful to answer this question. In scrolling down the list, the one thought that struck me as the best part of the shows were the musical numbers. The only sketches I really remember were the ones with Telma and Joyce as LouEffy and Moreen--those were great. Like someone else here said, it is all about the group, not the guests. | |
Barbara 06-19-03 11:59 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| First and foremost I would like to see the "lost episodes." I remember when the show was first aired how wonderful it was to have something other than boring reruns to watch during the summer. Then there was this wonderful singing group. Who knew that they could sing cover versions of songs that were better than the originals? Who wasn't envious of Telma and Joyce? Tony was so hot in those days I'm sure lots of girls had their own "fantasy segments" watching the show. LOL! But seriously, it was all about the music. | |
Catherine 06-20-03 12:04 AM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| The entire show released by seasons and don't forget the Lost Episodes! | |
Krissy 06-20-03 12:11 AM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| All the music. Since they were a singing group that's what it was all about. | |
Laura 06-20-03 3:23 AM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |

Carrie 06-20-03 9:05 AM |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| Seeing them in Pittsburgh last month made me search on line to see if there were DVDs available of their show. I was disappointed to see I couldn't find any and this is such a great idea. I hope someone releases the shows on DVD. | |
Linda 06-20-03 3:01 PM |

George 06-20-03 4:46 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| It would be great to have some current interviews to go along with the DVDs of the shows. I read somewhere on this message board that after the Pittsburgh show they all saw around talking about the old days and some of the hysterical things that happened to them. That would be a great thing to add to the DVD. | |
Paul 06-20-03 5:05 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |

suggested this! I've waited for years for someone to think it would be

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| Just reading the posts brought back memories again. I went back to Wednesday nights at 8pm in 1974 all over again and I was 12 years old. I still remember the songs they would sing and I remember the guests like Ruth Buzzi, Dom Deluise, Jackie Gleason and others. I remember the first show with Rosie Grier and Loretta Swit. I think if we all could email request to Nick at Night or TV Land we could get this show on. I have already emailed TVland regarding the TOAD show and I hope everyone will do the same. Thanks to everyone for the thought and memories as I enjoyed hearing and reading them. You all brought me back to a very nice place. I miss those days sometimes. | |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| No Goodlife TV here. Besides, didn't someone post earlier that Goodlife doesn't air the show any longer? Well I guess it doesn't matter if there is going to be a DVD set issued. That would be wonderful. | |
Jack 06-21-03 9:20 pm |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| Maybe people would be reminded if a DVD is released that the hit songs were theirs as a group and that Tony, Telma and Joyce (and Pam behind the scenes) comprised that group. It is long overdue. | |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |

| By the looks of all the posts regarding releasing DVD's of TOAD, they would be a HUGE seller! I'd be first in line for my copies! I would really love to see the first four summer replacement series (since those are the lost episodes). I lived every Wednesday night to see those shows. I thought Tony was just the most handsome man I ever saw. I loved the girls also. I'd love to see the uncut versions. Goodlife cut a lot of the good stuff out. You've got my vote!!!!! | |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| My friend and I went to so many shows back in the day that we knew the dance steps and the hand motions that Telma and Joyce did during all their hit songs. We even made up some routines of our own to some of the songs in the Ragtime Follies album. Not only would we sing along to the records using their inflections, we would dance along with their steps. I'd buy the whole set. | |
Susan 06-22-03 1:46 PM |
Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| I remember in High School we used to have to type business letters in typing class. My friend and I would always address our letters to Tony, Telma and Joyce. We were really hooked on the show. I would love to see the shows again. | |

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| I used to go over my best friend's house to watch every Wednesday night. We were the only ones allowed in the TV room because we recorded every show with cassette tapes. This was not easy since it was a house with 1 TV and she had 6 brothers who were always threatening to bust in the room and sing along with the songs. Our devotion and fervor was so strong, however, they never actually did it for fear what would happen to them. Oh and they also made sure the dogs weren't around anywhere where they would bark and mess up the recording. LOL! I would buy the whole set. | |

I definitely would like to see all the opening numbers on a compilation DVD. The idea about new interviews is a great one! And bloopers! It would be awesome to see bloopers!

The only shows I have seen are the ones that a friend taped for me. When the show was aired on TV back in the 70's I watch it faithfully. Since there are lost episodes that no one has seen since the show was aired, those for sure would be appreciated on a DVD. Of course I would buy the entire DVD collection.

I remember them doing, Jambalaya, Go To Rio, What The World Needs Now Is Love, Help/We Can Work It Out, I Can See Clearly Now, My Eyes Adored You, Then Came You, Sad Eyes, Up A Lazy River, and others. I miss this show.

Re: Tony Orlando & Dawn on DVD |
| We all have been waiting for a TOAD DVD for a very loooong time and anything would be great including the group's 1988 reunion tour and performances. However, regarding the show it would be great if the show was released in its original format and have out-takes/bloopers....lost performances and an extended concert spot at the end of the show where Tony, Telma and Joyce sang songs. This was edited down from and hour or two and most of it is lost. Let's hope someone picks up the ball on this. | |
Barry 07-07-03 12:01 PM |

Gimme A Good Ole Mammy Song |
| I just found the single Gimme a Good Ole Mammy Song from 1975 on Arista with Little Heads in Bunkbeds, but what surprised me was that Mammy Song was the B side and Little Heads was the A side. I always thought it was the other way around. Does anyone have a release date for this song? The only other Arista single was Skybird ....to my knowledge. | |
Brant 06-30-03 5:33 PM |
Re: Gimme A Good Ole Mammy Song |
| Was this song originally recorded for the "Ragtime Follies" album? It seemed odd that it surfaced after they seemed to have launched a new phase musically - the more sophisticated, pop/soul sound like "He Don't Love You," etc. I think "Skybird" was just a bunch of out-takes from previous recording sessions - Arista's way of trying to cash in on TOAD's Elektra success. Anyone know? Del - I bet you know! And by the way, everyone should still keep thinking about a TOAD DVD collection - it could happen, you know...stay tuned! ; ) | |
David 07-01-03 4:31 AM |
Re: Gimme A Good Ole Mammy Song |
|
This was from their 1974 LP Prime Time, which also features Look In My Eyes Pretty Woman..yes, the Skybird LP was a bunch of tracks that where not released before they jumped over to Elektra, but I think the songs are still good. It makes me wonder why some of them where never released prior to that. |

Re: Gimme A Good Ole Mammy Song |
|
The Goldmine Standard Catalog of American Records lists Arista 45-105 with "..Mammy Song" being the A-side. However, they often get their info second hand. David-since you can hold the record in your hand, you have the best knowledge. Whichever side has something like (45,105-SA) on it is the A side. It was released in Jan or Feb of 1975. It was 3 singles before Barry Manilow's "It's a Miracle"-45-108 if that helps narrow it down. I suspect that this was not intended to be a hit, but rather to give radio stations--Adult Standards, Country- something by Tony Orlando & Dawn to play while other stations were playing the disco "Look in My Eyes Pretty Woman". Remember that while wearing the Bell label, "Prime Time" -like all albums in the 1300 series- was an Arista managed release. "Prime Time" has a pretty varied mix-disco, ragtime, country, r&b, pop so it's hard to say whether or not the ragtime songs were leftovers. "Skybird" was a collection of previous selections-but can hardly be considered "throw-aways". Almost that whole album got well played at Adult stations into the 80s. The main reason for "Skybird" was probably to finish the Arista contract. It does seem though that almost each time Elektra released something, Arista was pretty close with something. Quite often the choice of which songs make an album or not is a matter of a coin toss so one song makes the album while another sits on the shelf with the hope of making a future album. Let me also throw in some quick review quotes about the Ragtime music of Tony Orlando & Dawn. I came across a rather "stuffy" collection of reviews in the library at school as a music ed major that said "upon reading the titles (the ragtime songs on the original Greatest Hits LP) one is tempted to dismiss them as pap, but upon listening one finds heartfelt renderings of contemporary but authentic ragtime period compositions." Entertainment Weekly said in their review of the Rhino "Best of"--"the ragtime hits bounce with a Broadway verve that proves one thing--the Charleston had a baby and named it Rock n Roll". |

Re: Gimme A Good Ole Mammy Song |

This is strange. I pulled the record out and side "A" Little Heads is #2089-s while side "B" Mammy Song is 2109-s. Thanks for the info. |

Joyce, Pam On New CD with Franky Perez |
| I just bought the new CD of Franky Perez with Joyce and Pam singing back up to most of the songs. Their names are also listed. A great CD so all the fans of Dawn have to by this CD. It almost has the same flavor of the girls with Tony. You hear a lot of their vocals on this CD. Again a great CD I hope it hits #1. | |

| This is a very rare track from Tony Orlando and Dawn's reunion tour around 1990. The tour was originally booked for 5 weeks but was so successful, starting in 8-88, that Joyce and Telma stayed on with Tony for a year. In 1989, Telma got the part on family matters and left the tour and was replaced by Joyce's sister Pam. I have only seen it once on eBay but you can check there. The record was released in 1991,on Quality records. I hope this helps you. | |

Lyrics of the Song Candida |
| My mother was a great fan
of Tony Orlando and Dawn, hence I was named after their song "Candida". I
have always wanted the correct lyrics to this song and some information
about it such as the year it was written. I have just come across this site
by accident and I would be most grateful if anyone could help me. Thanks, Candida, IRELAND |

David 06-14-03 5:22 AM |
Re: Lyrics of the Song Candida |
| Candida was Dawn's first
hit in October 1970. As far as lyrics you should be able to type
"Candida lyrics" in any search engine and hit search and that should help
you. Also a new TOAD hits CD containing Candida will be released June
17....The stars wont come out if they know you are about cause they couldn't
match the glow of your eyes and so who am I, just an ordinary guy...trying
hard to win me first prize....oh Candida, we could make it together, the
further from here girl the better....where the air is fresh and clean...mmm
mmm Candida...just take my hand and I'll lead ya...I promise life will be
sweeter, cause it says so in my dreams....The future is bright, the gypsy
told me last night...said she saw our children playing in the sunshine...and
there was you and I in a house baby, no lie, and all these things were yours
and they where mine....oh candida....... P.S. If you check on eBay they sell sheet music there just search for Candida. |

Boston Garden Performance March 1976 |
| I am 41 yrs old & saw TOAD perform 27 yrs ago; Tony had an interview at a local radio station (WRKO) & came out of the limo after the interview & actually spoke to the small group of fans outside of the radio station (just days before his 32nd birthday). He looked great and I reached across the top of the limo and Tony reached out back and held my hand! I was a typical 14 year old with a crush that wouldn't die! I have always admired you and you were never the typical entertainer. Fans of yours I believe will agree that you were so removed from the "hollywood" persona that it gave your fans pride in being a "fan" of yours - always!!!! I hope someday you'll return to BOSTON to entertain us all in our hearts!!! Wish you well | |

| I was also remember that radio interview Tony did when he performed at the Boston Garden. He actually performed on his birthday (April 3rd) of that year. The city of Boston also had a small parade for him in honor of his birthday. He has played in Boston a couple of times since then but not in recent years except private parties. Everytime I see him, I always mention to him that we all love him in Boston and would love him to come back. He IS such a special person and really makes his fans feel special. When I read your post, it brought back great memories..... | |

Tony Orlando in Jim Thorpe, Pa. Last Night |
| Tony Orlando and his band
were at Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania last night, and they were
incredible! He is a very outgoing, energetic man. I enjoyed all the music
he sang, especially when his band broke out in a Led Zeppelin song. You
haven't lived until you've seen Tony Orlando doing Led Zeppelin. He also
sang James Taylor's hit "Fire & Rain", and then his band went right into
Prince's "Purple Rain". That was interesting, seeing Tony Orlando and his
band merging "Fire & Rain" with "Purple Rain", but it sounded great! He
even came out into the audience during the show and was signing autographs
and everything! We're hoping he comes back again soon! |
