Adult Contemporary Info
I was looking through the latest edition of BILLBOARD TOP ADULT CONTEMPORARY HITS 1961-2001 by Joel Whitburn and reviewed the entries for Tony Orlando & Dawn. I thought You might be interested.

DAWN:
Candida-#8
Knock Three Times-#2
I Play and Sing-#15
Summer Sand-#9

DAWN featuring TONY ORLANDO:
What Are You Doing Sunday-#23
Vaya con Dios-#37
Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree-#1(2 weeks)
Say Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose-#1(3 weeks)

TONY ORLANDO & DAWN:
Who's in the Strawberry Patch with Sally-#3
It Only Hurts When I Try to Smile-#36
Steppin' out I'm Gonna Boogie Tonight-#4
Look in My Eyes Pretty Woman-#6
He Don't Love You Like I Love You-#1
Mornin' Beautiful-#2
You're All I Need to Get By-#13
Skybird-#7
Cupid-#2
Midnight Love Affair-#15
Sing-#7

TONY ORLANDO:
Don't Let Go-#48
Sweets for My Sweet"-#20

Pretty impressive. Some people dismiss this chart, but to say these weren't hits is like saying Dolly Parton had no hits when she charted higher on or just made the Country
Chart.

Re:  Adult Contemporary Info
First, thanks for printing chart lists of dawn AC hits.  It was very impressive.  I never knew that You're Growin' On Me was released as a single!!!!!  If anyone has email or address for Rhino, let me know.  We need to get Dawn LPs on CD.  Does anyone have a copy of Tony and Dawn on Pat Sajak show from 1988 from their reunion tour?  I saw them in Atlantic City and they where incredible.  It was if they had never stopped.  The harmony was still there.  Does anyone know why the single What Are You Doing Sunday was released a year after the LP?  It went #3 in Europe and was the groups third single.  Is Sweet Summer Days the a side or It Only Hurts When I Try To Smile??  Thanks.

Re:  Adult Contemporary Info...Growin' On Me and More
"(You're) Growin' on Me" was originally the B-side to "Cupid" (Elektra 45302) in 1976. It was re-released as an A-side with "You're All I Need to Get By" as the B-side (Elektra 45432) in 1977. This was probably an attempt by Elektra to keep things "moving" in 1977. "What Are You Doing Sunday" first appeared on the "Candida" album and was used again on the "Dawn featuring Tony Orlando" album. Why it was the 5th single is just the way it happened. It and the other singles fared better on the UK and European charts because the group was on tour over there at the time. "It Only Hurts When I Try to Smile" was the A-Side to BELL 45450. This is indicated by the number on the left side of the label-under the bell. "It Only Hurts When I Try to Smile" has 1949 while "Sweet Summer Days of My Life" has 1950.

Central Washington State Fair
My husband and I caught Tony's performance at the fair this evening and it was great.  We were lucky to even get a seat to see him.  Keep up the great work.  I can't imagine he has been entertaining for 43 years.  He looks great.  His voice is better than ever.  He put a lot of energy into his performance this evening.  I hope to catch him in concert again, real soon.  I just wish I could have met with him and talked to him.  Tony, thank you for making the fair this year the greatest it's been.

Hi Candace,
I was at the Central State Fair show also. Although it was windy and cold, Tony and his awesome band were as good as ever.  Tony has sure taken us to some faraway places but every trip is worth it!!!

Dawn
First, Dawn fans should check out the B side of Gypsy Rose for a great song, "The Spark of Love is Kindlin."  Am I the only one who thinks this is a great song???  At the time of the Dawn break up in 1977, Tony and Dawn where recording an album, only the single "Sing/Sweet on Candy" was released?  Does anyone have any info on this or track listing for the unreleased album??  Does anyone want to petition them to get this released with the other albums on CD?  David

Re:  B-Sides
"Don't Act Like a Baby", "The Spark of Love Is Kindlin'", I Know You Like a Book", and "Sweet on Candy" were all B-Sides that never got released on any of the albums. "Vaya con Dios" and "Sing" were A-Sides that were never on any of the original albums. "Vaya con Dios" has been released on the various CD compilations over the years like the "Definitive Collection". "Don't Act Like a Baby" is on the 3 -CD set Tony Orlando & Dawn "36 All-Time Greatest Hits" which can be found at www.timelessmusic.com, ebay, or often at Sam's Clubs. There is also the public service promo sound sheet "You Can Be More than You Are". There are probably some songs that never got released at all. The best hope for these "rarities" is that they get added as bonus tracks to the original albums when they make it to CD release-if ever. BMG controls the Bell/Arista material. They have been saying for quite awhile now that "some" Tony Orlando & Dawn albums would be released under their BMG Heritage line. Rhino would have easiest access to the Elektra material. E-mail both with requests. There is no track info for a last incomplete album. The last Tony Orlando & Dawn single in the 70s was "You're Growin' on Me" (A-Side with Telma on lead)/"You're All I Need to Get By"(B-Side) on Elektra

Re:  B-Sides
I can think of one other never released on an album, "It Only Hurts When I Try to Smile," which was the B side of "Sweet Summer Days of My Life" on the Bell label.

Re:  B-sides....Tony@Dawn
FYI, I emailed BMG, Arista, and Rhino.  Both BMG and Rhino emailed me back to say they do not have any dawn CDs planned or that <Rhino>doesn't have them in their catalogue. Arista has not returned my email as of yet, nor do I think they will as they have never done so, so I guess for now there are no plans for any new dawn CDs.

Import CD Alert
Hey Everybody,
I thought I'd tell you about a new Import Cd that is floating around.  It's called Tony Orlando & Dawn Greatest Hits on Brillant #33020-UPC:8712273330204. It has a very nice photo of Tony, Telma, and Joyce with 16 tracks. 12 of the tracks are taken from "The Big Hits", and 4 are taken from the "House of Strangers" import that also floats around. If you're interested in having it for the sake of collecting the cover photo, go for it. As far as the music goes, you probably have it already.

Re:  British Fan
Jeanette, you are the third fan from England to ask that question in the past couple of months.  It just goes to prove that TOAD still has a strong international appeal.  Tony Orlando and Dawn do not currently perform together, but rest assured if they ever have England on their schedule, we will post it here and I will make special note to let you know.

Thanks to all who participated in our contest.  There were so many wonderful entries which will become part of a new feature, "10 Best Things About Being a TOAD Fan".  Our winner came up with the unique response of submitting their own 10 Best Things About Being a TOAD fan and here they are:

Ten Reasons to be a TOAD fan in 25 words:

1. Catchy tunes
2. Cultural diversity
3. Telma's sarcasm
4. Tony's charm
5. Joyce's voice
6. Beautiful Gowns
7. Platform shoes
8. The Orango Tango
9. Beer can curlers
10. Wonderful childhood memories of TOAD

The winner is not able to attend the show personally and has asked us to donate the tickets on behalf of all the Friends of TOAD to a local Yakima community organization.  We decided upon the Yakima Senior Center as the recipient.  Enveloped with the infectious spirit of giving demonstrated by the person who donated the tickets and the winner of the contest, we also included the fair admission and some spending money for two lucky seniors.  We are sure they will have a ball!

Smokey Joe's Cafe
I bought the CD of Smokey Joe's Cafe, but found that Tony didn't sing one song. What's going on? He was suppose to sing 12 songs.

Re:  Smokey Joe's Cafe
Marie, he did appear in the Broadway production of the show June 8-20, 1999.  He did not record the show CD.  I did see the production, but I only remember him singing "Spanish Harlem," "Stand by Me," and some song having to do with the "Shimmy"--the other 9 songs, I have no clue.  Perhaps your question is better directed to the person or site where you received this information?

Flight Home From New Orleans
I have some time to sit at the PC for a change so I thought I'd share a funny story from the flight home from New Orleans. This might have been inspired by some of the specials that have aired showcasing the CBS variety shows and GTV.

You know how Tony often mentions "the forget factor". Well the crowd boarding the plane was pretty lively for 10am or so including the flight crew with lots of humor.

As the Captain made his announcements and the attendants did their thing with giving all their names etc, a passenger a few rows down starts stating that the fight attendants for our flight would be Eunice, Laverne (Cher), and none other than Lou Effy and Moreen. This was accented by the passenger acting out Lou Effy serving a can of Coke out of her hair. This all begged the question where was Mama. Well she was flying the plane of course and "don't make her have to pull it over". The amazing thing was how many people on the flight got it all.

Tony is Awesome
My name is Marie. I am Tony's biggest fan ever!! I have seen him several times. Once when I was 10 years old, my parents took me to see him at Lake Tahoe. I went up on stage and got a kiss. What a thrill!!  I also saw him in Vegas in April of this year and I am planning to see him again around Christmas time.

I am visually impaired so it was hard to see him clearly. I was told that Tony has put on quite a bit of weight.  But that doesn't matter to me. Tony has always had such a big heart , and I will be a loyal fan til the end.
