I am 36 going on 37 in upstate NY and boy am I a fan. When I was a kid my mom used to let me stay up for the Tony O and Dawn show. Thats when TV was good. Loved every episode and used to act these out with friends - the singing and the acting. Still love him - he's a hottie. I would love to see him now. Wish i could meet him too. Someone like him needs to know just how much he is loved.

Looking to trade or buy videotapes of TOAD shows
Sunday 28-Jan-2001 19:01:18
Hi!  I am a long-time Tony Orlando fan since 1974  and I would appreciate some help in obtaining videotapes of the Tony Orlando & Dawn shows that are currently showing on GoodLife TV on Satellite.  I have a small dish  and unfortunately  the programming providers do not carry that station.  If there is a fellow fan out there who receives that station  & would be willing to tape some shows for me  I would be willing to buy or trade for them  & would be eternally grateful!  I have original TOAD LP's and some very good concert and backstage photos to trade  or would be willing to pay a fair price for them!  Thanks very much!

It was a great weekend. I thought I was going to make it if I was lucky to the late show  but I got real lucky and arrived at 7:30 so I did both shows. It was great to see Denise  Tara  Pat  Jo  and Linda & Frank and catch up with the guys in the band. Can't really add much to Pat's excellent review except to echo how awesome the show was. "Papito's Trumpet" and "My Carribean Gem"(co-written by Dave) are HITS!! You can bet that I will do anything I can to help promote thses albums!!! I might also add that during the first show Tony show Tony thanked people who are responsible for his success. He spent a good deal of that talking about Telma and Joyce. He called Telma the Queen of Television for never having been off the air from Their show to the present. He called her a super-talented hard working lady who keeps on going and going. He then went on about "the quiet one". He called Joyce a dedicated mother  and said that she is THE best singer. Tony was visibly emotional while talking about Telma and Joyce. He misses them.

Thanks for getting the names to those songs Del.  I'm glad you got to both shows on Saturday.  And when the CD is out we will all be listening closely to see if they chose one of the cuts from the shows we attended.  Please keep us updated on any promotion you're involved in for the CD(s).  Great seeing you and having a chance to chat before and after the show.

I saw Tony for the first time at the Bottom Line
Sunday 21-Jan-2001 13:42:23
I enjoyed listening to Tony on WCBS last week
and I went to the Bottom Line to see him. I always loved the music  but never got to see him. He was great and his band is so nice.
I wanted to meet Tony and thank him for thanking me for my note I faxed in  but he was busy and I never got to meet him. Hope someday I do. I spoke to a few guys in the band  they were so sweet. Tony  if you should ever read this  I send my love and hope to meet you.
Love Mary

Great Review. Sorry we did not get the chance to meet.  I went to the earlier show.  I still cannot wipe the smile off my face today.  He looked great and sounded wonderful.  I am going to see Tony in Lancaster and I am counting the days.  I wish we had the opportunity to meet him last night but he looked so hot and needed the time to cool down.  Hopefully I will get a kiss in February.
Del  It was very nice to meet you.

The Bottom Line...Part 2
Sunday 21-Jan-2001 06:43:14
I have to say The Bottom Line is an excellent club with a first-rate staff.  Everyone knew us from the night before (was it our wild dancing perhaps?) and they gave us the same table.  Maybe a bit too close for the camera tonight.  With all the equipment on stage  there isn't much room for Tony to travel around the stage without coming awfully close to the edge  so he essentially planted himself front and center throughout the shows.
As the shows were being recorded for the new CD they were essentially the same as the night before  except he threw in the New Year's Eve section and "Sweet Gypsy Rose" which he missed the night before.  He was even silly at times--tossing the music over his shoulder one sheet at a time when he couldn't lay his hands on the one he was looking for.  David Letterman's writers came to the show and Tony had a good time with them there--and even changed "Hello Dolly" to--"Hello David." And as a special treat he also sang "Halfway to Paradise" and "Bless You"--something he doesn't do often  but really should.  All in all they will have a tough decision choosing the "best" cut of each song for the CD  but Stay the Night in Puerto Rico is sure to be a hit as soon as it's released.  Each time he did the song you couldn't help but be swept away by it and into it.
Snow 101.  Whew!  I passed the test and was able to recite all the fun facts I had been taught by my tutors after the show  when we found out it had been piling up with snow outside.  I learned more about snow tonight than I ever had reason to know in my whole life  thanks to Jo  Frank  Linda  and Del.  First and most important  forget about hailing a cab  even if you can find one still on the streets.  The guys in the band headed out to a main street and returned a while later  much colder  dusted with snow  and not a happy camper in the bunch.  I wonder if they are still standing under the awning by the club...  For those lovers of snow  I can tell you for a fact  no loving words were said about the snow tonight.  LOL!!! Such language!!!  Not one lover of snow in the pack  not even the man himself!  Now me  the snow bunny  was standing like an idiot trying to catch snowflakes and people thought I was really strange.  I was bummed that no one wanted to build a snowman.  Sheesh!!!
Manhattan 101.  So the 5 of us were loose on the streets of New York in a car  with me having the most knowledge about how to get around Manhattan (believe it or not) trying to guide us over snow covered streets to Penn Station and the Waldorf=Astoria.  It was my turn to give lessons.  With Linda driving and me as co-pilot  we made it to Penn Station to drop off Del and then onto the Waldorf for us.  I went inside to get written directions so Linda (& baby) and Frank could make it back to the Lincoln Tunnel and home safely.  I hope they did.
I'm just happy I don’t have to leave tomorrow with all this snow.  It's been snowing steadily throughout the night with thunder and lightening  which I was told never happens...well until now that is.  Lots of firsts this trip...
I posted another group of photos from the show on the domain for your enjoyment.  Follow the link at www.friends-of-toad.com

Another great review! Wow  more snow. I was disappointed to read that you didn't have a snowball fight. Now  had I been there  we would have! LOL!!! Just teasing.
Thanks for so many pictures! They are wonderful. I especially like the last one posted for the January 20th show. Have a safe trip back home and when you get on the plane you can leave all the snow behind you and dream of being back on the beach in Hawaii or in the CHILLING 50 degrees of SF ;).

See Julie  you should have come.  We could have built that snowman while everyone was grousing about the lack of cabs...
And boy could we have had a snowball fight!  Didn't even think of it.  My hands are chapped from last night though--I need about a gallon of lotion before they'll be back to normal.
It was hard to leave that suite at the Waldorf.  The City looked so pretty this morning all covered with snow when I went to bed around 7:00 and when I got up at 11:00 a lot had already melted away.  That was the most sleep I've had at one time in days.  I'm out at my favorite place on Long Island now and Jo and her girls are coming over for a swim (yes they have an indoor pool).  Somehow I think it will be the girls swimming and Jo and I snoozing...
It was a fabulous trip and that new song of his Spend the Night in Puerto Rico is still running through my head.
They're here.  We're off to the pool.

Thanks Di  I arrived in CA tonight and find the temperature change drastic!  Of course  while I was gone my neighborhood was hit with the rolling blackouts so everything electronic is flashing and it took quite a while to reprogram and reset everything electronic.  How aggravating!  I hope you didn't get hit with any.

The Bottom Line
Saturday 20-Jan-2001 16:26:37
New York in the dead of winter with a snow storm on the way.  Yikes!  Why am I here instead of on a nice warm  sunny beach?  Oh yeah!  The shows at The Bottom Line!  Totally worth all this miserable weather!  I am so excited about these shows.  The CD that comes from this will truly be a hot item.
The show started out in the usual way with "I've Got Rhythm" and into the standard follow-ups of "Candida " "Knock Three Times " "Yellow Ribbon " and "He Don't Love You."  Followed by two of his new songs--the first was a upbeat Latin-style piece about Puerto Rico (and did he shake his bon bons....) followed by another Santana-style song about his grandfather  Jose  called "Papito (Tocolo)."  Both were in the audience participation style we all love.  "Harmonizing Nights" [where all of Long Island cried ;)]  "Spanish Harlem " "Stand by Me " "I Who Have Nothing  and "Young Blood" (shoop...shoop...shoop--Sue we missed ya) were next.
The Lefty's set followed with "You're Always On My Mind " "Folsom Prison " "Whole Lotta Love " "Wake Up Little Suzy " and "Call Me Al."  More new additions to the show (Yeah!!!):  Fire and Rain and a whole series of Beatle Songs:  "Can't Buy Me Love " "Something " "We Can Work It Out " "Come Together " "Get Back " "Ob-La-Di  Ob-La-Da"--and these were the full versions  not just a medley. We did our best to rival the screams of those in the 60s  with some of us losing our voices.  All with great audience participation  everyone singing their hearts out  and Tony loving every minute of it.  And the show went on and on--for the life of me I just can't remember them all.  We lost all track of time by this point.  The room was throbbing with energy.
People from Tony's old neighborhood were there as well as many friends.  Although the crowd was small because of the bad weather  you certainly couldn't tell.  One of the best audiences I've had the pleasure to be part of in long time.  We sang even after our voices were gone and danced til we were too tired to stand.  The club was rocking--or was that another earthquake?  LOL!!!  Tony kept joking that he was going to throw everything from the book into this show  because if we get hit with the snow storm on Saturday this might be the last chance to get the songs recorded.  But we all know the show will go on regardless of the weather.  It was a fabulously long show.  We became fast friends with many New Yorkers who came out for this show and even after it was over the party atmosphere continued.
New Yorkers were thrilled that Cousin Brucie--a legendary local DJ--was there.  After the show he asked that we all cooperate while he videotaped a spot with Tony which will be aired during the Variety Telethon on PAX-TV in late March.  When it was finished the audience broke out into thunderous applause.  Tony had to save his voice for the recording of the next night's shows and even though he tried  he couldn't help talking to everyone who came up to him.  He even autographed a fan's arm because she didn't have anything for him to sign.  There was a great addition to the band for this CD--Fred on percussion (and he was having fun with it too).  It's been a long time since the band was rounded out by the sound of congas  timbales  etc.   I told Tony that having that fullness of sound back in the band reminded me of the days when Buck Clarke played with him.  We then both told Fred stories about Buck and what an extraordinary musician he was.
We had a chance to chat with Hank Medress after the show about the CDs (yes that's plural) that are planned.  After the shows are over and the studio work is done on this CD  which they hope to put out soon after  he said he would be flying out to Branson and they will be returning to the studio for work on another!  Two CDs  can you imagine!?
We congregated outside the Club after it closed and continued the party atmosphere on the streets of New York for quite a while.  Gee  maybe that's why we couldn't get a cab to stop!  It was pretty raucous and we were all squeezed under the awning because of the rain. We didn't get back to the hotel until just this side of Dawn :) and I spent the next couple of hours working to copy photos from the digital camera to the PC and then uploading them to our site and pictures of the Lefty Brothers to their site as well.  Hope you all appreciate them.
More after tonight's show...

You certainly know how to write a review.  I couldn't agree with you more.  What a night for Tony and the band and what a night for us in the audience.  There was so much energy in that one room...I don't think the Bottom Line ever rocked like that before!  I had very little voice left by the end of that night.  I felt as if Tony was singing in our living room and we were just singing along with him and the guys.  What a fabulous night in NYC!
PS My girlfriend's arm still has Tony's signature on it!  Thanks so much for the photos.

You are right Theresa--it was like we were all in some cozy room watching the show--although we could have done with better chairs and more dance floor space!  That room was alive with energy and when I remember that show I can even remember that feeling of energy.
I'm glad you enjoyed the photos and I'm sure that the autograph will last for a long time.
Our voices were thrashed by the last show  which wasn't good because I had rehearsal the day after I got home and there was no way I was hitting anywhere near my range.  LOL!!!  Oh well  it was all worth it.  I'm glad I didn't miss out on this once in a lifetime recording--makes me wonder how they will tone us down on the CDl  The DAT tapes they made from the shows were outstanding.  Now we just have to be patient.

Tony Orlando arrived about 7:45 to a cheering crowd. After greeting most everyone individually  Tony was briefed of the rundown for the show  including the contest. Tony looked up and said "so that's David?" Noting some peoples' discontent at the poor condition of the statue  Tony commented that he really thought it was Eric Burdon. Throughout the morning  Tony  the makeshift band  and the crowd performed live renditions of "Cupid"  "Knock Three Times"  "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)"with Jerry Butler's nephew joining in  "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree"  "Stand By Me"  "Spanish Harlem"  and "Candida". In between songs and interview spots  Tony told stories  traded barbs with the morning crew  signed autographs  posed for photos and greeted the people who turned out to greet him in his old neighborhood. Finally the big moment arrived  and Tony picked the winning entry to receive David. The winner was not present  but it was stated on the entry form that the winner intended to display the statue on her husband's used car lot. The woman had til the end of the day to claim her prize. WPLJ also debuted a new club remake of "Knock Three Times" done as a duet with Tony and Deborah Gibson that will be featured on Deborah's new album. Scott remarked on-air about how much time Tony was spending with people one-on-one greeting many by name. Tony reminded Scott that anyone in entertainment who fails to make time for those who made them and "truly work for a living" misses out on the best part of being an entertainer. Even after the show had ended and the radio hosts had left  Tony did not leave until he talked with  took pictures with  and/or signed CDS and records for every person that took time out of their day to see him. In fact if his wonderful publicist had not reminded Tony that there was someplace to be  we'd still be there. Before leaving Tony insisted on having his picture taken with his former Bell labelmate David Cassidy. Now remember the bad news folks? Yep-I forgot my camera. I know I know this was history in the making  and If I had joined the pose a great pic to add to the websites. I did ask a very nice guy if he would scan the photo and send it to the websites including C'mongethappy. He said he would and wrote down the web addresses and my e-mail. If I receive it  I will forward it for sure. The Tony Orlando & Dawn and Partridge Family worlds coming together in one place in the same day. How great is that?

Del, Thank you so much for the great review of Tony's appearance. As always  I wish I was there  but I felt like I was reading your review. It's too bad about your camera  but it's nice that someone will send you pictures of it. I was so pleased to read what Tony said about his fans. It is so important for a celebrity to make time for his/her fans/friends - even if it's just a simple smile and "Hello". But with Tony  he goes way beyond that and that makes him a very special person. I'm glad you made it to the appearance and had a good time.

The David Cassidy statue was missing some fingers. It seems the guy who plays Tony Soprano was a guest to the morning show awhile back and took one. The other three-well it seems David had a mishap during transportation. The contest to win David had been running for some time  and it was announced that Tony would be picking the winning entry later in the show. The makeshift band and singers rehearsed the music   and the crowd continued to build as all waited for Tony Orlando to appear.

Tony is doing two shows each Friday and Saturday at NYC's BottomLine where a new album of all new songs will be recorded live. I arrived at he scene about 6:45. There was a good crowd already  WPLJ's Scott & Todd with the entire morning crew  some musicians and singers  and on one table a 5'8" wax statue of David Cassidy. The statue which had seen better days was to be given a way via a drawing during the broadcast.

Thanks for all the compliments Jo!  But the real success of this section is due to the participation of the many Friends of TOAD who contributed their precious photos.  It is the most comprehensive collection of Tony Orlando and Dawn photographs on the internet (and still growing).  I checked the numbers on the site after the first 12 hours and we had a phenomenal spike in the statistics. Just yesterday the number of visitors doubled over the average.  Obviously  you're not alone in enjoying the blast from the past.  I think this is a real winner.

Wonderful photos.  Thanks so much.  It brought back so many memories.  It's great that even those pictures that are nearly 30 years old still come through so clear.  Amateur photography in those days isn't like the point and shoot idiot cameras we have now.  On my dial up connection from home they are great.  But from the office with a DSL connection  ooh-la-la!

K-TEL 8-track memory
Friday 12-Jan-2001 19:43:48
I'm a 37 year old male originally from southern Cal. When i was 8 or 9 i used to listen to a little radio in my room that i shared with my younger brother. In '73 i remember really liking 'Tie a yellow ribbon.' So much that i saw a commercial on tv for an 8 track tape with it included  'K-TEL's greatest hits' or something. I conned my mother into ordering it for me  and when it arrived  it was the first music i ever owned. I remember sleeping in the dining room by the 8 track just to listen to this cartridge play into the night. i just loved that song. So TOAD was my first favorite group ever! I currently own the ENCORE COLLECTION 'Knock Three Times' from BMG arista.

BUDDHA UPDATE/
Tuesday  9-Jan-2001 22:29:00
The board has been quiet lately so I'll make some noise by passing on a Buddha update. Buddha Records  the reissue division of BMG  is releasing more original albums from the Bell catalog soon. On Feb. 9  Buddha will release yet 3 more albums from David Cassidy & the Partridge Family (Shopping Bag  Crossword Puzzle  Rock Me Baby). However  I have it straight from Buddha that there are NO Tony Orlando & Dawn releases scheduled  but that this could change. Buddha also reminded me that releases are determined by number of e-mail requests. In fact the albums being released in Feb. were orginally planned for late 2001 at the earliest but due to e-mail from fans the releases were stepped up. So  LET'S GET BUSY and go to www.buddharecords.com  and tell Buddha you want ALL the Bell/Arista Tony Orlando & Dawn albums on CD NOW!

Candida
Dawn

The stars won't come out if they know that you're about
Cause they couldn't match the glow of your eyes
And  oh  who am I ? Just an ordinary guy
Tryin hard to win me first prize

CHORUS:
Oh my Candida
We could make it together
The further from here girl the better
Where the air is fresh and clean
Oh my Candida
Just take my hand and I'll lead ya
I promise that life will be sweeter
'Cause it said so in my dreams

The future looks bright  the gypsy told me so last night
Said she saw our children playing in the sunshine
And there were you and I in a house  baby  no lie
And all these things were yours  and they were mine

Chorus
