History of song "Tie the yellow ribbon around the ole oak tree"
Thursday 19-Oct-2000 23:09:23
Hello   I am trying to find the history and words of the song "Tie the yellow ribbon around the ole oak tree."
I have been looking for awhile and unable to find it.
If anyone has a copy of the song or the history  please email me.  Thank you so much for your help.

Matthew

Please help settle an argument.  My friends believe that tie a yellow ribbon is about Vietnam and not a prison. Please confirm the meaning and inspiration of the song.

Las Vegas Sun Article
Saturday 14-Oct-2000 00:51:02
There is a fabulous interview with Tony in the Las Vegas Sun available online at:
http://www.lasvegassun.com/sunbin/stories/archives/2000/oct/13/510899949.html?%22Tony+Orlando%22
and in it is a FABULOUS quote from Tony:
"We had a seven-year  unbelievable carpet ride " said Orlando  who says he never tires of the references to his former partnership. "We did seven years together and we were never off the charts in those seven years. We had a successful television show. It's been 28 years since 'Tie a Yellow Ribbon' and I'm still headlining in Las Vegas  Atlantic City  Reno and Lake Tahoe.
"Without Dawn there wouldn't be a now for me  and when you talk about me you have to talk about Dawn  just like if you talk to Paul Simon you talk about Art Garfunkel and when you talk to Diana Ross you talk about the Supremes."

Well  what a great QUOTE made from Tony himself!
Goes to show that behind every great man there is a great woman  only in this case TWO!!
Sounds like Tony WILL NEVER or COULD EVER forget where it all began for him.  And how very wonderful it is that Tony continues to acknowledge Telma and Joyce in such an appropriate way!!!

There is never a show where Tony doesn't mention Dawn throughout the show  and talk with fans about them after the show always saying how much he misses them. Perhaps schedules will lineup for them to come together to celebrate their 3oth Annivesary. Wouldn't be great to see all four of them on stage at the same time?? And just think of the possibilties of the ladies and the Lefty and Right Brothers. Tony would have one amazing choir!

Hi Pat!  Thanks for the links to those wonderful articles.  It was great to hear that Tony still thinks of Telma and Joyce.  Being a fan since 1973  it brought back alot of great memories.  He never fails to mention them at any of his shows and like he says  he wouldn't be where he is without the girls  AMEN!!!!  Thanks again and glad that Miss Hawaii won Miss America last night. I thought of you!!!

You can't think of one without the others  that's for sure. The wonderful music that Tony  Telma  Joyce and Pam created together has carried over into Tony's solo career and it's nice to see that he still thinks fondly of those times. He has told me several times how much he misses the girls and how much that time in his life means to him. And I agree Del  what a 30th Anniversary celebration it would be to have them all together again on stage!

I think that was a wonderful quote that Tony said. I'm so happy that he can look back fondly on the show and on Telma and Joyce. You're right  if their schedules permit it  they should get back together for the 30th anniversary. Thank you Pat  for the links.

EASTON SHOW
Sunday  8-Oct-2000 21:29:00
Easton was wonderful! The State Theater is a beautiful  old theater that has been restored to perfection. Tony and the band were fantastic as always. The show opened with "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" and continued with "I Got Rhythm"  "Candida/Knock Three Times"  "He Don't Love You"  "Harmonizing Nights"  the Smokey Joe's set  "Sweet Gypsy Rose"  the New Year's set  the Lefty Bros. Set  and the Veterans' Salute. If you paid close attention during some interplay with the audience  Tony did a line of "You're a Lady". It was great as always to visit with Jon  Pete  Terry  Kerry  Jim  Dave  Billy  and Joe after the show. I got a quick hello and goodbye in with Tony too as he was going. It was a rush to get there and back  but I'm glad I was able to make it as with the holiday rush coming  I probably won't make anymore shows this year.

Hi Del!
Wow  it sounds like you had another wonderful time in Easton and it was great that you got to see the show and were able to swing it into your schedule.  It's terrific that Tony brought "You're a Lady" back into the show  if even only just a line or two!!
Hopefully  we'll be able to meet again and catch some shows somewhere along the way in 2001!
Thanks for letting us know all about Easton!!

Now that's a song I haven't heard him sing even a line of in years--"You're A Lady"--almost as obscure as "You Say the Sweetest Things " which used to be part of the show in 1973.  Thanks for sharing your review of the show Del.  Glad you made it to the show!

Hey Pat :  I got your message it sounds like you and Julie had a great time. I wish I was there. I hope you can get someone to record the show on vhs and sell it to the fans of Joyce and Pam. If you go to see Joyce and Pam this weekend  keep us posted and tell Joyce and Pam that John said hello from Charlotte. Tell them I am their biggest fan ever. They will remember me  I believe so. Pat do you and Julie hear anything from Telma? She also has a wonderful voice. I do wish they would do a reunion. I will be first in line for my tickets  and also fly to whatever city they are at. I am not big on flying but I will be there. I wish I could have seen Joyce and Pam. I will be there next time. If you know when they are performing ahead I will get my tickets and I will be there to see them.
I am their biggest fan ever ever. Pat  Julie thanks for sharing the scoop with all the fans of TOAD. P.S. Pat if you do go and if you talk to Joyce and Pam  please tell them that John said hello from Charlotte. Have fun and keep us posted. I am glad you all made it back safe.

GREAT REVIEWS!
Monday  2-Oct-2000 21:47:56
Hey Julie and Pat!  Your reviews were once again as terrific as always!  I enjoyed reading all about the play and all about your adventures in California and Vegas!  Will Mickey and Minnie ever be the same?
How exciting it was for you Julie  to finally have met Joyce and Pam and hear them perform in only the way they can!  And especially to bring that "blast from the past" into their show and speak of TOAD!   Gee  Tony does the same thing in his shows  can a reunion be all that far OFF?
And how wonderful it must have been for you two to have finally met!  It sounds like you two really had a fantastic time (even though they continue to lose your cars  Pat)  I thought that was just an East Coast thing!
I hope you'll be able to display some of your photos soon.  That would truly be wonderful to see!
Though I must say Pat  that California beach photos are just not the same without MOONDOGGIE in them  ;) but are very beautiful all the same.
Thanks for sharing so much with us!

Hi Jo   You are right  both Mickey and Minnie told me personally that they would never be the same...neither would Anaheim  Huntington Beach  Los Angeles or Las Vegas.  LOL!!!
I will have photos from the trip up soon on the On the Road with TOAD pages...I just need a 36 hour day.
And Moondoggie just didn't want any pictures taken without you there Jo!!!  Next time you'll have to come out here.

Sunday  1-Oct-2000 01:54:04
Hey Julie Pat:  It sounds like you all had a great time. I wish I was there. I can't wait to see some pictures of Joyce and Pam. Did you ask them anything about Tony or Telma? I hope they continue to tour and release a record. Did you tell them to check out the web site? Well I am glad there was a lot of people at the show. Again thanks for the update on Joyce and Pam.
P.S. How was the flight getting there and back? Would you go to California to see them again? I hope I get to see them in my lifetime because I love to hear Joyce and Pam sing and to see them live  hearing their voices again  makes you think how great they are. Do they still sing the same? Also what songs did they sing? It would be great if someone video taped the show. Again thanks for keeping us posted. I am glad you made it home safe. Did you sing any TOAD songs? Again  keep up the great work.

Hi John!   Thanks for your words of support.
We get our information on appearances directly from Joyce and Pam.  They provide us with the details on all their live performances and the flyers if they are available.
As far as their voices  they sounded better than ever!  I wish I could have heard more than just one song  so I may just go back down to LA for their performance next weekend.
There was a professional videographer at the theater and I will check with them to see if the video would be available to the public.
They are thrilled that so many of their fans remember them and have an interest in seeing them perform.
